Only the top three finishers in the August 1-11 tourney will have the chance to represent Asia in the World Cup.

MANILA - The draw of the groupings for the 27th FIBA-Asia Championship will be on June 6 here in Manila.

The pronouncement was made by SBP executive director Renauld "Sonny" Barrios himself during the press conference of the FIBA-Asia Championship in the Mall of Asia Arena on Monday noon.

The FIBA-Asia tournament will serve as the qualifying event for Asian countries that are bidding to take part in the 2014 FIBA World Cup that will be held in Spain.

Only the top three finishers in the August 1-11 tourney will have the chance to represent the continent in the World Cup that is held once every four years.

When asked about the next step that the SBP will be taking towards the staging of the games, Barrios replied by saying that "it's really more on the implementation now. The international standard is quite high, but we are looking forward to exceed the standards set by FIBA-Asia."

The former PBA commissioner reiterated that "this is not just the SBP hosting the event. That's why we're hoping that everybody will cooperate for it to be successful."
