MANILA - The Philippines' local organizing committee head Mauricio Martelino is positive that the country will be successful in staging the 27th FIBA-Asia Championship this coming August.
"We will leave no stone unturned to make sure that administratively we will host without any problems," said Martelino in an exclusive interview with Solar Sports Desk.
Martelino, once held the position currently occupied by FIBA-Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian. But during his term, it was still known as the Asian Basketball Confederation or ABC.
“Staging the FIBA-Asia championship is really a logistical nightmare. Because it’s an international event," said the former Asian cage official.
A total of 15 participating nations will come to the country in the middle of the third quarter of the year to vie for a spot in the 2014 FIBA World Cup that will be held in Spain.
Known in the basketball circuit as "Moying", Martelino echoed the sentiments of Bogs Adornado with regards to the formation of the national team.
"Now, I hope that the team we will field in will be the best of the best with long preparation," stressing the importance of players jelling together as one unit.
"Yun ang formula nila, they were released by their teams. Talagang naka-quarter pa nga yang mga yan," he recalled.
"Yung formal practice should at least last for six months," said Martelino, who was on top of the basketball organization in the whole Asian region when the Philippines last won the championship. [JCA]
