MANILA - “Pagdating ng kagipitan, may import kami ngayon na pwedeng sandalan... si Denzel Bowles yun.”
This was the enthusiastic statement given by San Mig Coffee Mixers superstar Peter June Simon on the eve of the team’s first game with their returning import.
Simon revealed that energy is much higher now in practice with Bowles in the fold.
“Nagkabuhay kami lahat... Mas tumaas yung energy namin,” Simon told Solar Sports Desk. “Kilala kasi na namin si Denzel. Alam na namin kaya niyang gawin."
"At ang maganda, kabisado pa rin niya ang triangle (offense). Alam niya san pupuwesto.”
No doubt, the Mixers are in need of an energy guy who will give back life to a team that is currently in an unfamiliar territory.
Without Bowles in the conference they won last season, San Mig Coffee are down 0-2. They lost their first game in an all-Filipino unit to Barako Bull Energy Cola before getting dumped by the Petron Blaze Boosters with little help from out-of-shape import Matt Rogers last week.
But as they begin to prepare for Friday’s return to action versus the Rain or Shine Elastopainters, their tormentor the last two conferences, Simon said the Mixers are more upbeat in facing the challenge.
“Mas excited kami ngayong luamro, kaya hopefully makakuha ng isang panalo,” stressed Simon, the team’s second best scorer. “Para makakuha ng momentum.”
As for the health of their import, which had an on-and-off campaign in the Chinese Basketball League, the former University of Mindanao stalwart is optimistic that Bowles is 100-percent healthy.
“Feeling namin nasa kundisyon siya. Ok naman yung mga galaw niya. Andun pa rin.”
The only thing that Simon is concerned about is Bowles’ stamina, which remains to be seen as San Mig has only been running half-court drills since the American power forward returned Sunday.
“Sa game natin makikita yun. Pero hopefully OK naman,” the Davaoeño shooter said.
“Pero sa ngayon, hindi na muna kami aasa kay Denzel. Kailangan kaming mga locals din magtrabaho.”
Simon is optimistic that with a few more polishing of their offensive plays and the familiarization of their new teammates in their system, the Mixers can finally shake-off a bad start.
“Maraming bago sa amin kaya adjustment pa rin, yung triangle (offense) alam niyo naman hindi pwedeng bara-bara.”
