MANILA – The Purple Knights defeated the Green Spartans, 65-58, for their second consecutive victory in the 2013 Solar Basketball League at the Dumlao Gym in Mandaluyong City Monday night.
The Purple team waxed hot in the first half going up 20-12 after Kristian Encarnacion buried a triple from the wing. But the Spartans countered with a 16-4 rally to take a four-point lead with 3:55 left in the second quarter.
With the score at 36-32 at the start of the third, both teams came out with guns blazing and went neck and neck throughout the period. The Green team had a 56-51 early in the fourth quarter, but the Knights fought back and gained a slim one-point advantage, 58-57, with 2:35 remaining in the game.
The Spartans had chances to pull close late in the fourth frame but a string of costly turnovers sealed their fate. The win gave Purple a 2-0 card for a share of the top one spot of the SBL standings, while Green slid down to 1-1.
Caumeran powered the Knights with 13 points and two steals, while Encarnacion finished the game with 11 points, four assists, and a game-high five steals. Meanwhile, Nomar Santiago paced the Spartans with 18 points and five boards.
In the second game, the Red Stallions dropped their second game in a row at the hands of the Sky Blue Bombers, 52-42.
The Bombers’ balanced scoring attack was too much for the Stallions, who found themselves down by as much as 12 points at one point of the game.
Aguinaldo scored 14 points for Sky Blue, while Gelverio and de Jesus had 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Mong Cinco almost single-handedly carried Red’s offense with 19 markers, while big man Pierre Salas chipped in 10.
